The public sector green building training programme includes three levels of courses

Introduction to Green Building Practice Workshops

The aim of the introduction to green building practice workshops is to raise awareness of the drivers of green building, the case for green building and the opportunities for green building in South Africa.

The introduction to green building practice workshops will be held in each province
over one full day.

The introduction to green building practice workshops will be held in March 2020.

Accredited Workshops

The four Accredited Workshops to be offered include the following:

  • Green Star for New Buildings
  • Green Star for Existing Building Performance
  • Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) Expert
  • Green Star Sustainable Precincts

The aim of the Accredited Workshops is to capacitate    government officials to implement green building principles and rating tools for the certification of green buildings.

The four Accredited Workshops will be held in Gauteng, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal over one full day per course in each location.

The Accredited Workshop will be held over the period:   

24 February 2020-6 March 2020 

Full Green Building Accreditation

The four green building accreditations offered through the Programme include:

  • Green Star New Buildings Accredited Professional
  • Green Star Existing Building Performance Accredited Professional
  • EDGE Expert
  • Green Star Sustainable Precincts Accredited Professional

The aim of the full Green Building Accreditation training is to become an Accredited Professional registered with the GBCSA. Accredited Professionals can advise project teams on the application of appropriate sustainability interventions, as well as, collate and submit certification applications to the GBCSA. Only Accredited Professionals can submit certification applications to the GBCSA.

Recognition as an full Accredited Professional requires government officials to attend an Accredited Professional workshop, complete an online course and exam per course, as well as sign an Accredited Professional Agreement with the GBCSA.The online course component requires a 10 hour input per course and the exams a 2 hour input for Green Star rating tools and a 2.5 hour input for the EDGE rating tool.  The Green Star exam is an open book exam and a pass mark of 75% is required. The EDGE Expert exam is a closed book exam. Officials will not be required to attend an Accredited Professional workshop previously attended.

The Full Green Building Accreditation Training will take place over the period:

Online Course (9 March 2020 to 20 March 2020)

Exams (23 March 2020 to 27 March 2020)
